Kerala Set to Host India’s Longest Flyover — Aroor-Thuravoor Elevated Highway Nears Completion

Kerala is rapidly constructing what is set to become India’s longest flyover, the Aroor-Thuravoor Elevated Highway, a major infrastructure project that promises to revolutionize connectivity on National Highway 66 (NH 66).

The six-lane elevated corridor, which spans a monumental 12.75 kilometers, has achieved a significant milestone, with 65% of the construction work now complete. The project, being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with a budget of approximately ₹2,200 crore, is on track to set a national record for the longest flyover in the country.

The Aroor-Thuravoor stretch has long been a notorious bottleneck on the vital NH 66, which connects various states in Southern India. Once operational, the elevated highway is expected to:

  • Decongest Traffic: Drastically ease the severe traffic congestion between Kochi and Alappuzha.
  • Reduce Travel Time: Significantly cut down travel time for long-distance commuters, especially benefiting inter-state travel between Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
  • Engineering Marvel: The highway is being constructed primarily on massive single pillars in the median of the existing road, making it one of the longest single-pillared skyways in the country.

NHAI officials confirmed that all 360 supporting pillars and 3,000 girders have been constructed, with the current focus on girder erection and paving the road deck. The project also includes the development of three exit ramps and a toll plaza.

Despite the challenges of constructing over an existing busy four-lane highway—which has caused temporary traffic snarls—construction is progressing at an accelerated pace. The massive workforce of over 2,500 workers and 350 machines is operating round the clock to meet the deadline.

The elevated highway is currently targeted for final completion and inauguration by May 2026.

The launch of the Aroor-Thuravoor Elevated Highway will mark a defining moment in India’s push for world-class road infrastructure, providing a modern, seamless, and high-speed travel experience for millions of commuters and freight transporters.
