Karnataka’s ‘Shakti’ Free Bus Scheme for women Sets World Record

Bengaluru, India | October 15, 2025:
In a historic achievement, Karnataka’s flagship ‘Shakti’ scheme has entered the London Book of World Records for enabling the highest number of free bus rides by women in the world.

Launched on June 11, 2023, the Shakti scheme provides free travel for women domiciled in Karnataka on non-premium state-run buses operated by KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC. The initiative, aimed at empowering women and promoting financial independence, has recorded an extraordinary 564.10 crore free journeys across the state within just two years.

The record, officially recognized by the World Records organization, highlights the program’s massive social impact and its role in redefining public transport accessibility for women.

Officials stated that by June 2025, women passengers had already availed over 474.82 crore rides, demonstrating the scheme’s popularity and effectiveness. The government’s investment in the initiative has translated into increased mobility, better access to education and employment, and improved participation of women in public life.

Speaking on the occasion, a senior KSRTC official said, “This recognition is not just a record for Karnataka but a symbol of women’s empowerment through inclusive public policy.”

The Shakti scheme continues to serve as a model for other Indian states, showcasing how progressive transport policies can create lasting social change.
