A major breakthrough in renewable energy has been announced from Italy, where a local startup, GEVI Wind, has developed a revolutionary vertical micro wind turbine featuring AI-powered self-adjusting blades, achieving an unprecedented 60% higher energy output compared to leading conventional vertical-axis models.
The Rome-based company recently secured a $3.1 million (approximately €2.7 million) seed funding round to accelerate the mass production and commercial rollout of the innovative turbines.
The compact vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are distinguished by their proprietary system that uses Artificial Intelligence to fine-tune the blade angles in real-time, making adjustments every few milliseconds. This sophisticated control system continuously analyzes data on wind speed, direction, turbulence, and aerodynamic interactions.
“Our goal was to make local wind energy significantly more accessible and efficient,” said Emanuele Luzzati, founder and CEO of GEVI Wind. “The AI allows the turbine to ‘learn from the wind,’ constantly optimizing for maximum energy capture, regardless of the wind’s variability.”
Beyond the dramatic increase in energy yield, the design offers key advantages for decentralized and urban energy systems:
- Low Noise: Operating at below 38 decibels (comparable to a whisper), the turbines are ideally suited for residential and urban rooftops.
- Reduced Stress: The active blade control also enhances structural safety and longevity, reportedly reducing mechanical stress on the turbine by up to 80% during strong winds.
- Compact & Modular: Standing only about 3 meters (9.8 feet) tall with a 5.4-meter (17.7-foot) rotor diameter, they can be easily installed on rooftops, industrial sites, and local microgrids without the need for heavy machinery like cranes.
- Low Wind Speed Operation: They begin generating a nominal power output of 3–5 kW at minimum wind speeds of just .
The successful funding and imminent industrial-scale production mark a significant step for Italy’s position in global renewable energy innovation, paving the way for more distributed and sustainable power generation in challenging, high-turbulence environments. GEVI Wind plans to use the investment to scale up manufacturing and enter key European markets, offering a viable and high-performing alternative to traditional wind power models.
