Chennai to Host India’s Biggest Global E-Sports Tournament

The city of Chennai is set to become India’s new epicenter for competitive gaming as it prepares to host the Chennai Esports Global Championship (CEGC) this November, a landmark event backed by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Touting itself as the nation’s most ambitious international esports tournament, the CEGC aims to put India firmly on the global gaming map.

The championship, organized by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in partnership with Skyesports, will feature major international and national tournaments at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in two phases.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony on November 7, bringing together global industry stakeholders and government officials to inaugurate the championship.

The Chennai Esports Global Championship marks a historic milestone as it is the first international esports championship in India to be fully supported by a State Government.

Officials from the Government of Tamil Nadu view the event as a strategic long-term initiative to:

  • Position Chennai as a global esports hub, akin to other major international destinations.
  • Boost the creative economy by strengthening related industries like broadcasting, content creation, and production.

Organizers anticipate a crowd of over 20,000 attendees across the six days of the event, with an expected online viewership reaching into the millions, reflecting the immense potential and growing acceptance of esports across India.
