Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, today announced a massive order win for 1,937 buses from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTU). This landmark contract, valued at approximately ₹668.76 crore, is one of the single largest bus orders in India’s recent history and significantly reinforces Ashok Leyland’s dominant position in the country’s public transport sector.
The order will see a diverse mix of fully built buses and chassis configurations being supplied, tailored for various operations including town, mofussil (rural), and State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) services.
The new fleet is designed to meet the most stringent safety and performance standards while focusing on superior passenger comfort and accessibility. Key features and specifications include:
- Advanced Engine Technology: The buses will be equipped with the cutting-edge iGen6 BS VI technology, ensuring compliance with the latest emission norms and delivering high performance and fuel efficiency.
- Safety Compliance: Every vehicle is built on the latest AIS 153-compliant chassis platform, adhering to the most recent Indian safety and performance regulations. High-speed Mofussil and SETC buses will feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for enhanced safety.
- Passenger Comfort & Accessibility:
- Urban Low Entry and Semi Low Floor buses will feature Automatic Transmission and air suspension for a smoother commute and better driver comfort.
- These low-floor variants will also be equipped with wheelchair ramps to ensure smooth access for passengers with special needs.
- Intelligent Transport Systems (ITMS): All new buses feature an upgraded battery and alternator to meet the power requirements of advanced ITMS integration.
This substantial order further strengthens Ashok Leyland’s decades-long association with the TNSTU. The transport undertaking is one of the company’s most valued customers, with over 21,000 Ashok Leyland buses already operational in its fleet.
