Union Home Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Hailed as India’s largest and most technologically advanced sports facility, the inauguration marks a significant leap towards fulfilling the government’s vision of transforming Ahmedabad into the “Sports Capital” of the country.
Built at a reported cost of ₹825 crore and spread over an area of 1.19 lakh square metres, the complex is designed to be a complete ecosystem for athletes and sports enthusiasts. Mr. Shah stated that the complex is equipped to host nearly 18 types of sports and is a crucial part of the city’s plan to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
- Olympic-Class Aquatic Complex: Featuring an international-standard swimming pool.
- Centre for Sports Excellence: Dedicated to nurturing high-level talent.
- Sports Science and Nutrition Labs: Providing scientific support and guidance from sports dieticians.
- Indoor Multi-Sports Arena: Accommodating various indoor games.
- Athlete Housing and Training Facilities: Equipped with medical and training amenities.
- Community Sports Centre: To encourage local participation in fitness and sports.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah asserted that the complex aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of making India a top sports nation by 2047. He highlighted that along with the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium and the under-construction Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Motera, Ahmedabad now possesses world-class infrastructure to host any major international sporting event. The naming of the complex after legendary freedom fighter Veer Savarkar is intended to inspire players to win medals for the nation on the global stage.
The partnership of this complex with other massive sporting facilities solidifies Ahmedabad’s bid to become a global sports powerhouse.
