An Indiana resident may soon be the proud grower of the world’s tallest sunflower, as his enormous plant inches closer to breaking the current Guinness World Record.
Mark Jefferson, a passionate home gardener from rural Indiana, has been carefully cultivating the towering sunflower in his backyard since early spring. Now standing at a staggering 30 feet and still growing, the plant is just shy of the official world record of 30 feet 1 inch, set in Germany in 2014.
Jefferson attributes the sunflower’s growth to a mix of organic compost, daily care, and a whole lot of love.
“I never imagined it would grow this big,” he said. “It started off as just a fun backyard experiment with my kids — now it’s attracting visitors from all over the county!”
Officials from Guinness World Records are expected to inspect the plant later this month to verify its measurements and determine whether it qualifies for the title of Tallest Sunflower Ever Grown.
Locals have rallied around Jefferson’s floral feat, dubbing the plant “Sunny the Giant” and turning his garden into an unofficial tourist attraction.
If verified, this would mark the first time the record has been broken in the United States in over two decades.
