Shri A Velu Ananda Chari Awarded Padma Shri for Excellence in Traditional Temple Art

Celebrated temple sculptor and architect Shri A Velu Ananda Chari from Telangana has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art. His lifelong dedication to preserving and reviving India’s ancient temple architecture has earned him national acclaim and deep respect among traditional artisans.

Trained in the intricate craft of Sthapatya Veda (traditional temple architecture and sculpture), Shri Ananda Chari has played a pivotal role in constructing and restoring numerous temples across India and abroad. He is especially renowned for his leadership in the renovation of the Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, one of the most significant architectural undertakings in modern-day Telangana.

With over 1,000 temple projects to his credit, Chari’s mastery lies in combining Kakatiya, Chola, and Dravidian styles, ensuring both historical authenticity and architectural grandeur. His work continues to inspire a new generation of sculptors and craftsmen who are being trained under his guidance.

Speaking after the announcement, Shri Ananda Chari said, “I am deeply honored to receive the Padma Shri. This award is not just for me but for every traditional artist who works silently to keep our heritage alive.”

In 2024, the Telangana government had also recognized his contributions by providing a monthly pension and financial grant, underscoring his cultural significance to the state.
