“Padma Shri for Surendra Kishore: A Torchbearer of Honest Hindi Journalism”

In a momentous recognition of ethical journalism and literary contribution, veteran journalist Shri Surendra Kishore has been awarded the Padma Shri for his outstanding service in Literature & Education – Journalism. The 77-year-old journalist from Bihar has spent over five decades reporting with integrity, insight, and dedication to the truth.

Shri Kishore began his journalistic journey in the 1970s, writing for prestigious Hindi newspapers like Jansatta, Dainik Aaj, Hindustan, and Dainik Bhaskar. His crisp analysis of Indian politics, fearless investigative reporting, and deep knowledge of Bihar’s sociopolitical landscape earned him widespread respect.

One of his most notable stories was his courageous coverage of the Bobby murder case (1983), which uncovered an alleged police cover-up and triggered national attention. His reporting has often influenced proceedings in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and even in Parliament, showcasing the impact of principled journalism.

Kishore is also known for his personal values. He once declined a housing allotment offered by then Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, stating he would not accept favors that compromised journalistic independence. Despite physical health challenges in recent years, he continues to write and mentor younger journalists.

On account of his ill health, the Patna District Magistrate personally delivered the Padma Shri award to his residence—a rare and honorable gesture.

  • Career spanning 50+ years
  • Refused government perks in protest of cronyism
  • Maintains one of Bihar’s richest personal political archives
  • Described by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh as “a walking encyclopedia” of Indian politics

Speaking after the announcement, Shri Kishore said, “Journalism is not about comfort—it is about courage. This award strengthens my faith in the value of honest work.”

Shri Surendra Kishore’s Padma Shri is a timely tribute to the spirit of fearless, ethical journalism in an era that needs it more than ever.
