“Padma Shri for Stephen Knapp: A Global Messenger of Indian Spiritual Wisdom”

Renowned author, spiritual scholar, and cultural ambassador Shri Stephen Knapp has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Literature and Education, especially in spreading Indian philosophy and spiritual heritage across the globe.

A resident of the United States, Shri Knapp has spent over four decades writing, translating, and interpreting ancient Indian scriptures, including the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Puranas, and Vedic literature, making them accessible to global audiences through English-language translations and commentaries.

Shri Knapp’s work has played a pivotal role in introducing millions in the West to the values of Sanatana Dharma, yoga, karma, meditation, and the spiritual depth of Indian culture. His more than 30 books, essays, lectures, and global seminars have elevated understanding and appreciation for India’s literary and philosophical legacy.

“True education is not just about facts, but about understanding our purpose, values, and the eternal truth,” Knapp once said at an interfaith conference.

Apart from literature, Shri Knapp has actively promoted interfaith dialogue, Indian cultural festivals, and has worked closely with various temples and spiritual communities in the U.S. and India. His efforts have significantly contributed to strengthening India–U.S. cultural ties and promoting world peace through spiritual literacy.

In honoring Stephen Knapp, India acknowledges a global ally who has devoted his life to sharing the light of Indian knowledge systems far beyond its borders, enriching minds and souls alike.
