In recognition of his tireless efforts to promote literature, education, and indigenous knowledge, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Kethavath Somlal from Telangana.
A respected educator, writer, and advocate for tribal upliftment, Shri Somlal has dedicated his life to advancing literacy and cultural identity among the tribal communities of Telangana, especially the Banjara and Adivasi populations. Through his work in both academic and grassroots settings, he has empowered generations of students from marginalized backgrounds to pursue education with pride and purpose.
Shri Somlal is also known for his literary contributions in regional and tribal languages, especially Lambadi, promoting native dialects through poetry, stories, and folklore documentation. His writings preserve the oral traditions, values, and heritage of tribal life, which are often overlooked in mainstream literature.
An inspirational figure in both classrooms and community forums, Shri Somlal has led numerous literacy campaigns, teacher training programs, and cultural workshops aimed at bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and modern education.
“Education is not just about textbooks — it’s about identity, dignity, and opportunity,” said Shri Somlal, reacting to the honour. “I accept this award on behalf of every tribal child who dares to dream.”
Scholars, social activists, and educationists across Telangana and beyond have celebrated the recognition, calling it a tribute to a man who has spent his life lighting the path of knowledge for the underserved.
With the conferment of the Padma Shri, Shri Kethavath Somlal is rightfully acknowledged as a guardian of tribal literature and a champion of inclusive education.
