“Padma Shri for Dr. Yashwant Singh Kathoch: Chronicler of the Himalayan Legacy”

Celebrated historian, educator, and archaeologist Dr. Yashwant Singh Kathoch from Uttarakhand has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contributions to Literature and Education, with a focus on Himalayan history and heritage.

Born on December 27, 1935, in Mason village, Pauri Garhwal district, Dr. Kathoch devoted his life to studying the ancient culture, art, and archaeological significance of the Garhwal Himalayas. He completed his M.A. in Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology from Agra University, followed by a D.Phil from H.N.B. Garhwal University.

He served as a teacher and principal for over 33 years, during which he inspired generations of students to appreciate India’s historical and cultural depth. After retirement, he focused on writing and research, becoming one of Uttarakhand’s most respected voices in historical scholarship.

Dr. Kathoch is the author of over a dozen acclaimed books, including:

  • Madhya Himalaya Ka Puratattva (Archaeology of the Central Himalayas)
  • Uttarakhand Ka Naveen Itihaas (Modern History of Uttarakhand)
  • Madhya Himalaya Ki Kala (Art of the Central Himalayas)
  • Bharatvarshiya Etihasik Sthalakosh (National Historical Site Gazetteer)

He also co-founded the Uttarakhand Research Centre in 1973 to promote regional studies and preserve local heritage.

His efforts were previously recognized with the Presidential Certificate of Honour and accolades from various cultural and academic institutions. The Padma Shri now brings national spotlight to his tireless work in documenting India’s lesser-known historical treasures.

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Kathoch said, “This honour is not just mine—it belongs to every scholar who works quietly to preserve the soul of our civilization.”

Dr. Yashwant Singh Kathoch’s Padma Shri award celebrates not only a personal achievement but also the broader importance of protecting and understanding India’s rich cultural and historical landscape.
