“IIT Bombay Goes Global: First International Campus to Open in Japan with Tohoku University”

In a landmark move for Indian higher education, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is all set to launch its first-ever international campus in Japan, marking a significant step towards global academic collaboration. The new campus, to be established in partnership with Japan’s prestigious Tohoku University, will be located in the Tohoku region.

This ambitious initiative aims to foster cross-border research, innovation, and talent exchange between India and Japan. The collaboration will offer dual-degree programs, joint research opportunities, and student-faculty exchange initiatives in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainable energy, disaster management, and advanced materials.

“IIT Bombay’s partnership with Tohoku University is a milestone that reflects India’s growing influence in global education. This campus will serve as a hub for Indo-Japanese academic cooperation and innovation,” said Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay.

The international campus is expected to open its doors to students by 2026 and will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, research labs, and an inclusive curriculum tailored to global standards. It is also seen as a strategic diplomatic and educational step that deepens India-Japan ties.

With this move, IIT Bombay becomes the first IIT to establish an international campus, reinforcing its commitment to academic excellence and global outreach.
