In a historic push for environmental conservation, the Uttar Pradesh Government has set a remarkable statewide record by distributing over 1 million young trees (saplings) in a single campaign — an initiative aimed at boosting the state’s green cover and combating climate change.
The record-setting plantation initiative, launched under the “Har Med Par Ped” (Tree on Every Boundary) campaign, involved collaboration between the Department of Forests, local self-governments, schools, NGOs, and community members across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
On a single day, over 1 million saplings of native and environment-friendly species such as neem, peepal, banyan, jamun, and arjun were distributed and planted by volunteers, students, farmers, and officials.
The state’s Chief Minister lauded the initiative, calling it a “green revolution at the grassroots” and affirming Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable development. “This campaign is not just about planting trees — it’s about planting hope for future generations,” he stated.
Officials noted that the project is part of a broader strategy to:
Mitigate air pollution
Improve biodiversity
Enhance groundwater retention
Create urban green lungs in fast-growing cities
The plantation drive has now been recognized as the largest sapling distribution in a single campaign by a state government in India, drawing praise from environmentalists, policymakers, and international organizations.
With plans for regular monitoring, maintenance, and community engagement, the government aims to ensure that a minimum 80% survival rate is maintained for the newly planted trees.
