A determined group of fundraising footballers in Hawick believe they have set a new world record for the most players participating in a continuous seven-a-side football match, all in support of a heartfelt cause.
The marathon game, held at Volunteer Park on Friday, was organised by managers from a local factory to raise funds for the wife of a colleague who has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).
Over the course of nearly 10 hours, more than 320 players took to the pitch, rotating in teams to keep the match going without pause.
Organiser Shona Redpath shared the emotional motivation behind the event:
“There’s nothing we can do to help Kendra’s illness, but we can raise money for research and the other work that MND Scotland do.”
The event not only brought the Hawick community together but also raised significant awareness and funds for MND Scotland, as the players played on in honour, unity, and hope for a cure. Confirmation of the record is expected from Guinness World Records in the coming weeks.
