Founded in 1819, the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIO-GOH), commonly known as Egmore Eye Hospital, holds the distinction of being the oldest eye hospital in India and Asia. Located in Egmore, Chennai, this historic institution has been at the forefront of ophthalmic care, education, and innovation for over 200 years.
Established by the British under the East India Company, the hospital began as a small eye infirmary serving soldiers and civilians. Over time, it grew into a full-fledged ophthalmic center and became a pioneering institute for eye surgeries, corneal transplants, and ophthalmic research.
Today, the hospital is affiliated with Madras Medical College and recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness.
“This institution is not only a hospital but a heritage landmark in Indian medical history,” said Dr. V. Mohan, a senior faculty member.
