19-year-old Ethan Guo sets out to break records and raise $1 million for childhood cancer research

Teen pilot Ethan Guo recently undertook a rare and challenging flight from Karachi to Mumbai amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. This leg of his journey was part of his ambitious solo mission to fly across all seven continents to raise $1 million for childhood cancer research.

Guo, a 19-year-old pilot from Florida, found himself navigating complex geopolitical challenges during this segment of his trip. Due to escalating tensions following a deadly attack in Pahalgam, which led to both countries imposing airspace restrictions and suspending diplomatic ties, Guo faced significant hurdles in securing the necessary permissions for his flight. Originally planning to land in Delhi, he had to reroute to Mumbai after encountering difficulties with paperwork and clearances. Additionally, his intended stop in Dhaka was denied for political reasons. Despite these obstacles, Guo managed to fly from Karachi to Mumbai, possibly being the only individual to take that route during such a volatile period

In an Instagram video, Guo shared his experience, stating, “I’m attempting to become the first person ever to fly to all seven continents solo. It’s Day 99 and I’m trapped in Pakistan because no planes are allowed to fly directly to India. So after getting strip-searched a total of eight times and convincing the Indian military to not shoot me down…I finally took off to Mumbai with a six-hour delay”

Guo’s journey, known as “Flight Against Cancer,” was inspired by his cousin’s battle with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Flying a modified Cessna 182, he aims to raise awareness and funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His mission encompasses over 50,000 miles, covering 60 countries with more than 75 takeoffs and landings. At each stop, Guo visits cancer hospitals to meet with patients and spread awareness about childhood cancer

Despite facing numerous challenges, including engine failures and complex international regulations, Guo remains committed to his cause. His journey not only aims to set a world record but also to make a significant impact in the fight against childhood cancer.
