Reshma Nilofer Naha, born on 4 February 1989 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is India’s first and only female marine pilot. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Marine Technology from the Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi
In 2011, Reshma joined the Kolkata Port Trust as a trainee. After rigorous training spanning over six years, she qualified as a river pilot in January 2018. In this role, she guides vessels through the challenging 223-kilometer stretch of the Hooghly River to the ports of Kolkata and Haldia, a route known for its sharp bars and bends.
Her groundbreaking achievements have garnered significant recognition. On 8 March 2019, President Ram Nath Kovind honored her with the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India’s highest civilian award for women.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Reshma has demonstrated remarkable resilience. She survived a life-threatening accident during her career, underscoring her dedication and fortitude in a demanding field.
