MV Dwarka was one of the last passenger and cargo ships of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BI). It was part of the modern D-Class ships, which were built after World War II to serve on routes between India, Pakistan, the Persian Gulf, and East Africa.

Entered service: 1947

Weight: 4,851 gross tonnes

Length: 121.6 m (399 ft)

Width: 16.8 m (55 ft)

Service speed: 13.5 knots

Primary route: Carried passengers and cargo between Bombay (now Mumbai), Karachi, and ports in the Persian Gulf and East Africa.

MV Dwarka and its sister ships played a crucial role in the movement of Indian and Pakistani migrants post-Partition (1947).

It was one of the last steam-powered passenger ships to operate in the region.

The ship was retired in 1982 and later scrapped in 1983, marking the end of an era for British India Steam Navigation Company’s passenger services.
