India’s Mahesh Bhupathi, teaming up with Belarusian powerhouse Max Mirnyi, captured the 2002 US Open Men’s Doubles title, showcasing grit and synergy in a thrilling three-set final.
The dynamic duo triumphed over the Czech pair of Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek, defeating them 6–3, 3–6, 6–4 under the lights at Flushing Meadows. It marked Bhupathi’s second men’s doubles Grand Slam title, the first being the 1999 French Open with compatriot Leander Paes.
Bhupathi and Mirnyi dominated the opening set with powerful serves and aggressive net play. Despite a brief setback in the second set, they bounced back in the decider, sealing the match with a strong finish and perfect chemistry.
Speaking after the win, Bhupathi said, “It’s an amazing feeling to win here in New York. Max and I have been working hard, and this title reflects our dedication and belief in each other.”
