Indian States with the Highest Number of Operational Airports

Gujarat and Maharashtra have emerged as the frontrunners among Indian states and Union territories when it comes to aviation infrastructure, each boasting nine operational airports — the highest in the country. This development reflects both states’ strategic importance and sustained investment in enhancing regional connectivity.

Closely following them is Uttar Pradesh, with eight operational airports, underscoring the state’s growing role in India’s expanding aviation network.

The increase in the number of functional airports across these states aligns with the Government of India’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, which aims to make air travel accessible and affordable for smaller towns and cities.

This regional airport expansion not only boosts tourism and business but also plays a critical role in enabling quicker access to remote areas, thereby fueling economic growth and integration.

As India moves towards becoming a global aviation powerhouse, the leadership of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh in developing airport infrastructure sets a benchmark for others to follow.
