Restaurant on Wheels is a unique dining facility created by converting two overage MEMU coaches (Mainline Electric Multiple Units) into fully equipped restaurants.
Aimed at providing an enhanced passenger experience and tapping into non-fare revenue streams.
The restaurant is divided into two main sections:
- Chai-Chun: A casual tea and snacks outlet.
Focuses on premium teas and quick bites.
Designed for short, informal visits.
- Wow Bhojan: A fine-dining area.
Offers full meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Ambience tailored for comfort and family-friendly dining.
Fully air-conditioned interiors.
Modern décor and seating.
Eco-friendly approach using an upcycled train coach.
Open to railway passengers and the general public.
Inaugurated by Babul Supriyo, then Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Member of Parliament from Asansol.
Developed under the Indian Railways’ initiative for non-fare revenue generation.
Expected non-fare revenue: Approximately ₹50 lakh (₹5 million) by 2025.
The restaurant is operated on a public-private partnership model, where maintenance and operations are handled by private parties under a lease agreement with Indian Railways.
One of the first of its kind in Eastern Railway and among the early examples across Indian Railways. Enhances station aesthetics and passenger amenities. Promotes innovation in using decommissioned railway assets.
