World Athletics has officially ratified the recent world records set by Grant Fisher, Yared Nuguse, and Elliot Giles, marking significant achievements in middle and long-distance running.
At the Millrose Games in New York on February 8, 2025, American distance runners Grant Fisher and Yared Nuguse delivered record-breaking performances. Fisher set a new world indoor 3000m record with a time of 7:22.91, surpassing the previous record of 7:23.81 held by Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma since February 2023. In the same event, his compatriot Cole Hocker finished second in 7:23.14, also under the former record.
In the men’s indoor mile, Yared Nuguse clocked 3:46.63, breaking the prior world indoor mile record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019. Hobbs Kessler, also from the USA, finished closely behind in 3:46.90, both athletes running under the previous record.
Additionally, British middle-distance runner Elliot Giles set a new world road mile record of 3:51.3 in Düsseldorf on September 1, 2024. He edged out Yared Nuguse, who finished second in 3:51.9. Both times were well under the previous record of 3:56.13 set by Hobbs Kessler at the World Road Running Championships in Riga on October 1, 2023.
These ratified records underscore the athletes’ exceptional performances and highlight a remarkable period in distance running.
