Annies Ladies Bar in Cape Town, South Africa, crafted a nearly 10-foot-long (3-meter) Gatsby sandwich, setting a national record for the largest Gatsby sandwich in the country.
The sandwich weighed approximately 145 pounds (65.27 kilograms) and featured ten layers of fillings, including:
6.6 pounds (3 kilograms) of tomatoes
44 pounds (20 kilograms) of assorted meats such as sliced sausages, steak, burger patties, and chicken fillets
22 pounds (10 kilograms) of French fries
Calamari
Onion rings
Various sauces, including garlic, cheese, pepper, mushroom, and tartare
The preparation took over four hours and cost about $160 for the ingredients.
The Gatsby sandwich, a staple in South African cuisine, originated in Cape Town in the mid-1970s as a takeaway meal for blue-collar workers. It is traditionally served large enough to be shared among multiple people.
While this sandwich set a national record, it did not surpass the world record for the largest sandwich, which was achieved in 2005 by a grill in Roseville, Michigan, with a 5,440-pound (2,467-kilogram) sandwich
