Youngest to become prime minister

Age at assuming office: 40 years and 72 days, making him the youngest Prime Minister in the history of India.

Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister following the tragic assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, on 31 October 1984.

Leadership during Crisis: After his mother’s death, Rajiv Gandhi led the Indian National Congress to a landslide victory in the 1984 general elections.

Efforts to Modernize: His leadership was marked by initiatives aimed at modernizing India’s economy, promoting technological advancements, and introducing computerization in various sectors.

He is often credited with driving the information technology revolution in India and opening up the country to the global economy.

His tenure faced significant challenges, including the Bofors scandal, which tarnished his image and led to political instability.

His government also faced political unrest, particularly with regional demands for autonomy, as well as struggles with the Sikh separatist movement in Punjab.

Rajiv Gandhi was the son of Indira Gandhi (India’s first female Prime Minister) and Feroze Gandhi (a prominent Congress leader).

Despite having little prior experience in politics, Rajiv Gandhi became an influential figure and is remembered for his efforts to steer India toward modernization, although his time in office also encountered political turbulence.

Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure was ultimately cut short when he resigned on 2 December 1989 following a series of setbacks and the growing challenges in his administration. He was later tragically assassinated in 1991.
