Historic Milestone: Droupadi Murmu, India’s Youngest President, Continues to Inspire

New Delhi, June 16, 2025 – As India looks back on its presidential history, the remarkable tenure of President Droupadi Murmu stands out, not just for her groundbreaking role as the first tribal woman to hold the nation’s highest office, but also for her distinction as the youngest individual to become the President of India.

President Murmu assumed office on July 25, 2022, at the age of 64 years, 1 month, and 5 days. This achievement surpassed the previous record held by Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who was 64 years and 2 months old when he took office in 1977.

While past presidents like Dr. Zakir Hussain (who became President at 60) were the youngest at the time of their ascension, President Murmu’s age at the time of her inauguration definitively established her as the youngest to date.

Her presidency has been widely lauded as a significant moment for representation and inclusion in Indian politics. Before becoming President, Murmu served as the Governor of Jharkhand and held various ministerial portfolios in the Odisha government, demonstrating a long and dedicated career in public service. Her journey from a humble background in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district to the Rashtrapati Bhavan continues to be a source of immense inspiration across the nation
