The first Chief of Army Staff – Gen. Maharaj Rajendra Singhji

General Maharaj Shri Rajendrasinhji Jadeja, DSO (15 June 1899 – 1 January 1964), was a distinguished Indian military leader who became the first Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He was the second Indian, after Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, to serve as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

The Indian National Congress paid homage to General Rajendrasinhji, acknowledging his service and leadership as India’s first Chief of Army Staff.

The Indian Army’s official Facebook page highlighted General Rajendrasinhji’s appointment as Commander-in-Chief on 14 January 1953, noting his significant contributions to the nation’s military history.

Born into the ruling Jadeja Rajput dynasty of Nawanagar State (now Jamnagar), he pursued a military career, reflecting his family’s tradition of service.

He served in various capacities, including commanding the 2nd Lancers and holding key positions in the Southern, Eastern, and Western Army Commands.

As the senior-most serving officer, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on 14 January 1953, following the retirement of General K. M. Cariappa. He became the first Chief of Army Staff on 1 April 1955, a position he held until his retirement on 14 May 1955.

General Rajendrasinhji’s leadership during the formative years of the Indian Army played a crucial role in shaping its structure and traditions. His contributions continue to be remembered and honored in various commemorations and discussions about India’s military history.
