Shortest tenure as vice president

V. V. Giri (1894–1980) served as the Vice President of India from 1967 to 1969. His tenure as Vice President lasted for two years, which was not the shortest.

The shortest tenure for a Vice President was held by R. Venkataraman, who served from 1974 to 1977 for almost three years, before being elected as President of India.

V. V. Giri’s tenure as Vice President was relatively short at two years, but not the shortest. His time as Vice President was notable for his involvement in shaping India’s political landscape.

After the sudden death of Dr. Zakir Hussain in May 1969, V. V. Giri was appointed Acting President of India on 24 August 1969.

V. V. Giri was then elected as the 4th President of India in 1969 and served until 1974, completing a full term.

While V. V. Giri had a relatively short tenure as Vice President (2 years), the shortest tenure was actually that of R. Venkataraman. However, V. V. Giri’s subsequent elevation to the Acting President and President of India made his overall political career significant in shaping India’s early political structure.
