Saina Nehwal made history in badminton by becoming the first Indian woman to win the gold medal in the women’s singles event at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) twice. She achieved this remarkable feat in 2010 at the Delhi CWG and again in 2018 at the Gold Coast CWG in Australia. In the 2018 final, Saina defeated her compatriot P.V. Sindhu with a score of 21-18, 23-21 in 56 minutes, securing her second CWG gold.
Additionally, Saina became the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal, capturing the bronze in the 2012 London Olympics on 4 August 2012. She was awarded the medal after Wang Xin of China retired due to an injury in the semifinals, securing Saina’s historic spot on the podium.
These achievements cemented Saina Nehwal’s legacy as one of India’s most successful and influential badminton players, having made a significant mark both in national and international arenas.
