First Woman Candidate in Mizoram in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election

Lalthlamuani’s political journey is a notable example of women’s growing involvement in politics in Mizoram, a state traditionally characterized by male-dominated political representation. Her candidacy for the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Mizoram was historic as she was the first woman to contest for the state’s single parliamentary seat.

Lalthlamuani leads the Chhinlung Israel People Convention (CIPC), an NGO that seeks to unite members of the Chhinlung tribe. The organization focuses on promoting cultural unity and addressing the socio-economic issues faced by the tribe. Her decision to enter politics was driven by what she described as a divine calling, showcasing her belief in spiritual guidance influencing her civic engagement.

In the 2018 legislative assembly election, she contested from the Aizawl South-I constituency but received 69 votes, reflecting the challenges faced by independent candidates and women in breaking through the established political landscape. Despite her limited electoral success, her candidacy was significant for setting a precedent for women’s participation in Mizoram’s political sphere.

Lalthlamuani’s efforts, although not resulting in electoral victory, highlighted the need for greater representation and voice for women and marginalized groups in Mizoram. Her participation has inspired other women to consider political careers, contributing to the slow but growing shift towards gender inclusivity in the state’s politics.
