First sportsperson to be awarded the Padma Shri

Balbir Singh Sr. (1924–2020) was one of the most celebrated figures in Indian sports history, particularly in field hockey. The 1956 Melbourne Olympics saw Balbir Singh as the captain of the Indian hockey team. Despite suffering an injury during the tournament, he inspired his team to another gold medal victory, marking India’s third consecutive Olympic gold in hockey.
