Nora Margaret Polley (née Fischer; 29 July 1894 – 1988) holds the distinction of being the first woman to represent India at the Summer Olympics, competing in tennis at the 1924 Paris Games.
Born in Budaun, British India, Nora Fischer moved to Scotland by 1901 and later attended Hillcote Boarding School in Eastbourne. In 1915, she married Sydney Trepess Polley, a military officer in the Indian Army who achieved the rank of Major in 1918.
In preparation for the 1924 Olympics, Polley competed in tournaments such as the Juan-les-Pins event in Cannes, reaching the semifinals in women’s doubles alongside Mrs. Musker. At the Paris Olympics, she participated in both the women’s singles and mixed doubles events.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Polley faced Greek player Lena Valaoritou-Skaramaga in the second round, securing a victory in three sets. In the third round, she was defeated by Spanish player Lilí Álvarez with a score of 0–6, 3–6.
