Subway Breaks World Record as the Largest Single-Brand Restaurant Chain

Subway, founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck, has achieved remarkable growth to become the world’s largest single-brand restaurant chain. As of September 2023, Subway boasts over 68,000 locations across more than 102 countries and territories.

In 2010, Subway surpassed McDonald’s in the number of global outlets, marking a significant milestone in the fast-food industry.

Despite having more locations, Subway’s revenue remains lower than that of McDonald’s and Starbucks.

In 2022, Subway reported exceeding global sales projections, achieving eight consecutive quarters of positive sales growth.

This momentum continued into 2023, with the company maintaining its position as the largest single-brand restaurant chain worldwide.

In November 2024, CEO John Chidsey announced his retirement, effective at the end of the year. Chidsey, who led the company since 2019, played a pivotal role in revitalizing the brand and overseeing its sale to Roark Capital for over $9 billion. Carrie Walsh, then President of Subway’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa operations, was appointed as interim CEO.

Subway’s journey from a single sandwich shop to a global fast-food leader underscores its adaptability and commitment to growth in the competitive restaurant industry.
