Kerala’s ‘Freedom Wall’ Mural Secures Place in India Book of Records

A monumental mural painting commemorating India’s freedom struggle has earned a place in the India Book of Records, marking a historic achievement for Kerala’s higher education sector.

Spanning an impressive 20,000 square feet at Thiruvananthapuram Sanskrit College, the artwork was created under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations by the State Higher Education Department. The initiative was a joint effort of the Collegiate Education Department and the National Service Scheme (NSS).

A Grand Artistic Tribute
The “Freedom Wall” project transformed main entrances, key buildings, and expansive campus walls across the state into vibrant canvases. Campus artists — many of them students — illustrated powerful scenes from the freedom struggle and local cultural heritage. The project is now recognised as the largest collection of murals in India related to the Independence Mahotsav.

Higher Education Minister Dr. R. Bindu, who spearheaded the initiative, explained:

“Our vision was to make campuses come alive with historical awareness, artistic brilliance, and beauty during the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. This recognition is a proud moment for the entire higher education community.”

Iconic Imagery & Public Response
Among the most celebrated murals is a moving depiction of social reformer Ayyankali embracing Panchami, a Dalit girl, symbolising the transformative power of education. This and other works have drawn widespread admiration from the public and art enthusiasts alike.

National Recognition
In a press conference at the PR Chamber of the Secretariat, representatives from the India Book of Records presented the certificate and medal to Dr. Bindu. She noted that this is the first time such an award has been conferred on India’s higher education sector for an initiative of this kind.

The “Freedom Wall” stands as a lasting symbol of patriotism, creativity, and the unifying power of art — a vivid reminder of the sacrifices and ideals that shaped the nation.
