Summary
Chandigarh’s Burail Model Jail has become the highest plant-growing jail in the country, cultivating over 1.5 lakh flowering plants of ten different varieties in just two and a half months. This achievement is credited to Burail Model Jail’s DSP Amandeep Singh and environmental enthusiast Rahul Mahajan. Their efforts earned the jail a place in the Limca Book of Records — the first time an Indian jail has received this recognition.
Plant Varieties Grown in Jail
Ten varieties of plants were grown in the jail, including pansy, calendula, alyssum, salvia, petunia, dahlia, verbena, kale, dianthus, and chrysanthemum. These plants were distributed to various educational institutions, religious places, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and colleges across the city to promote greenery and beautify the environment.
How the Initiative Began
Jail DSP Amandeep Singh shared that he collaborated with environmental enthusiast Rahul Mahajan, and together they conceived the idea of doing something unique. They started by sourcing and planting different flower seeds. A dedicated team was formed to contact various city institutions, ensuring plant distribution to schools, government educational institutes, religious sites, RWAs, and colleges. Those needing plants could directly contact the jail.
Between January 1 and March 15, 2020, the jail successfully cultivated 1.5 lakh plants.
A Source of Pride
“Growing and distributing 1.5 lakh flowering plants within two and a half months led to our jail being listed in the Limca Book of Records. It is a matter of pride for us that Chandigarh’s jail has been recognized for the first time,” said Omvir Singh, DIG of Jails.
