Rewa to Set World Record with 5,100 kg Khichdi Feast on Maha Shivaratri

The Pachmatha Temple in Rewa is all set to host a grand community feast on Maha Shivaratri, aiming to create a new world record with the preparation of 5,100 kg of khichdi in a massive 1,100 kg pot. The Asia Book of World Records team will be present to document the event.

For years, the district has upheld the tradition of preparing khichdi during the festival, but this year’s scale is unprecedented. Around 51,000 devotees are expected to partake in the maha prasad, which will be cooked using 600 kg of rice, 300 kg of lentils, 100 kg of pure ghee, 100 kg of green vegetables, and 4,000 liters of water.

The event, scheduled for February 18, has been in preparation for three months. The Pachmatha Ashram premises have been freshly painted, cleaned, and decorated with attractive gates and road arrangements to welcome devotees. A dome pandal with a central stage has been erected, with cooking on one side and the community feast on the other.

The current record for the largest khichdi distribution stands at 3,000 kg — a mark Rewa hopes to surpass by a wide margin.

Adding to the festivities, a Shiv Barat procession will take place, covering about 2 kilometers, with devotees lining the streets to offer their welcomes.

Manish Gupta, president of the Shiv Barat organizing committee, expressed confidence in the success of the record attempt. “This is the first time such a massive khichdi will be prepared in a single pot. The Asia Book of World Records team will oversee every step, from cooking to distribution,” he said.

If successful, the Pachmatha Temple feast will not only set a new world record but also mark a historic Maha Shivaratri celebration in Rewa.
