10 engines per week: Indian Railways’ Chittaranjan Locomotive factory resets world record

Indian Railways‘ Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has achieved a world record for manufacturing the highest number of rail engines in a year.

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, located at Asansol in West Bengal, earned an entry in Limca Book of Records for producing 402 electrical locomotives in FY 2018-19, the highest in the world. The factory broke its own record of manufacturing 350 locomotives in 2017-18.

Congratulating the factory workers for achieving this feat, Railway minister Piyush Goyal said that the hard work and dedication of the Railways family have made this feat possible.

With a rate of manufacturing 10 engines per week, the factory has already produced over 350 locomotives in 2019-20. Last month, the factory rolled out its 350th locomotive in the current fiscal year. Bettering its own record, the factory manufactured 100 locos in 88 working days, 200 locos in 158 working days, 300 locos in 216 working days and 350 locos in 250 working days.

Indian Railways’ Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has set a remarkable new record by manufacturing 10 engines per week, which is a significant achievement in the railway sector. This feat was made possible by the dedication and technical excellence at CLW, which has previously earned recognition for breaking various production records. For example, in the 2018-19 fiscal year, CLW produced 402 locomotives, surpassing its previous record of 350 units set in 2017-18.

CLW’s continued improvement in efficiency and manufacturing capacity has been recognized globally, and its success in producing high-speed and technologically advanced locomotives, such as the WAP-5 engine, further demonstrates its capabilities. This achievement is part of the broader push by Indian Railways to modernize its infrastructure and services, enhancing efficiency and reducing operational costs.
